Chameleons can be found in rainforests, grasslands, savannas, montane (mountainous) forests
and other regions of Africa and the surrounding geographic locations. While most chameleons can be found in shrubs and
trees, some species such as the Brookesia species may be found on the floor hiding in leaf litter or perched in small
shrubs. Chamaeleo namaquensis lives in the Southwestern part of Africa and inhabits sandy desert regions. There is
often little vegetation and this species has become accustomed to living a mainly terrestrial lifestyle on the ground.
The most popular and most diverse habitat would be that of Madagascar, an island
country off of the Eastern coast of Africa. It is estimated that about half of the worlds 135 + chameleon species call
Madagascar home. Other geographic locations include Africa, India, the Comoros Islands, some parts of Europe, and the
Middle East. With such a vast distribution, chameleons have adapted to many different habitats.
