Newborn Care

Newborn chameleons can be very cute, yet they do require a lot of care. Small " chamlets " are very fragile and easily decline in health if everything isn't right. First, baby chameleons can be housed together until they are about 3 months old. They can be housed in an aquarium, but it must be of substancial size. However, if you house them seperately, they are more likely to be good eaters because there is no food competition as well as no stress of seeing other chameleons. I find that chamlets do better in small screen cages. This allows proper ventilation. I also find that by housing baby chameleons singly in these cages, I have gotten a better survival rate.

Their enclosure(s) should be furnished with many small twigs and plants to give them plenty of hiding places and areas to climb. You should mist them 2 - 3 times daily to ensure proper humidity levels. You should feed your babies fruitflies as well as 1 week old crickets dusted with a calcium and/or vitamin supplement. When they reach the age of 3 months, you should begin to house them individually in screen enclosures of proper size. Some females can be housed together, but males will become territorial. If you did everything right, you should have happy, healthy Captive Bred adult chameleons with in a year.
